The Old and The New “Sleuth”

Published by rancosto at 11:01 pm under movies Edit This

I have watched both the old (1972) and the new (2007) version of Sleuth. What can I say… As in most cases, what the remake does is take a decent story and add some vulgarity to it that would be unthinkable back when the original was filmed.

The original starred Laurence Olivier as a famous murder mystery writer Andrew Wyke vs. Michael Caine as a handsome lover of his wife, Milo Tindle. The 2007 release features Michael Caine as Wyke, with Jude Law stepping in as Tindle. While it was certainly interesting to see Michael Caine play Olivier’s part, the rest of the movie stands no chance compared to the original. The story is still good, based on Anthony Shaffer’s thoughtful play, although I suspect his jaw would have dropped if he read the script; but the way it is done… Sorry. I have no taste for such things.
